Ephesians — Outline

There is a unique emphasis on the Mystery of the Church as a new Gentile and Jewish unity in the book of Ephesians. The unity is not a unity of purpose, but of nature. This establishes the theme of the book — the church.

The outline of the argument of Ephesians:

  1. The unity of the church. Ephesians 1-3
    1. The members of the church.
      1. Saved. 1:3-7
      2. Sealed. 1:13-14
      3. Seated in heavenly places with Christ. 2:4-6
      4. Sanctified. 2:8-10
    2. The perfection of the church — Jews and Gentiles together.
      1. Wall of separation removed. 2:11-22
      2. The mystery of the church revealed. 3:1-9
    3. The head of the church — Jesus Christ. 1:18-22, 3:14-21
  2. The practice of the church. Ephesians 4-6
    1. The call of the church. 4:1-3
    2. The equipping of the church. 4:7-16
    3. Relationships of the church.
      1. Purity of the church. 4:17
      2. With all. 5:1-2
      3. With each other. 5:18-21
      4. With your spouse. 5:22, 25
      5. With your parents. 6:1-2
      6. With your children. 6:4
      7. With your employer. 6:5-8
      8. With your employee. 6:9
      9. Towards the devil. 6:10-12
